The Nursery is located at the Luscombe Innovation Site on land owned by EarthFix. The Nursery is handled by Victoria Bakker and the team at Forest Rehabilitation Ecology, who are responsible for the gathering of seeds, the selection of species, the propagation of trees, and the growth of trees that are necessary for our revegetation initiatives.
Objective:
To produce local provenance species represented in Coastal Dunes, Wallum Heath, Eucalypt Woodland, Wetlands and Rainforest ecosystems. On-going reservation and conservation of rare and threatened species through education, propagation, distribution, and habitat enhancement. Working with sound Biosecurity protocols for Fire Ant prevention and management. A community hub for education, responsible gardening, and suitable species options for the region.
Utilising permaculture principles to provide an ecologically and socially sustainable design, beneficial to the community and environment. Creating a sustainable facility for plant production with engineering to provide efficiency and minimal footprint. This will be achieved through best aspect for optimum light in propagation and hardening areas. Installation of micro-spray misters for regular low volume watering.
Site preparation includes providing a geofabric underlay to compacted ground with a gradient of >400mm every 10 metres across the designated nursery site. Ground preparation will ensure surface flow and irrigation run-off containment. On site storage of materials and soil mediums in composting bays for soil medium recycling after composting. Ergonomic design of potting station areas and benches.
A macrophyte pond with natives including Common Rush (Juncus usitatus), Tall Sedge (Carex appressa), Frog Mouth (Philydrum langinosum) downstream from operations to aid with filtration and nutrient cycling, water collection and recirculation. Organic pest and disease management through propagation from disease resistant genetics, utilising neem, white oil, and detergent based sprays for soft insect control. Dry seed bank storage for up to 2 years for local species.
A negative ecological feedback loop will benefit the community by increasing native plants, genetic integrity of habitat corridors, native flower and fruit food sources for local invertebrates and fauna and increased regional moisture infiltration during rain events. A potential for future retail production with operations, and a regional platform to help provide opportunities for training with plant identification at various growth stages for conservation of native plants and ecosystem management.
